March 2014

John and I went on vacation in March... here are the g-kids posing for a picture to send to us.

Here is one of John's favorite trees... it is a very old maple tree in our 'back' lot at camp... we were out setting our night camera to get a glimpse of the fox family when we walked near 'his' tree... the snow is very deep here.  I dropped into the 'rotten' crust up to my knees!
We expect that this tree has been home to lots of animals over the years.

Here is one entrance to the fox den during the day.
Our night camera catches him/her going into the den....
and down it goes...  just the tail showing here, seconds later!

Okay, back to our spring vacation.
On our way to visit Bob and Glen in the OBX, we stopped the first night in Sturbridge at this British pub and had one of the best meals and drinks of our trip!

We were quite brave and drove near DC... didn't stop but took pictures from the car!

Dear Friends, Bob and Glen

We returned to the restaurant that inspired our holiday 'beamers'... the Jolly Roger.

Bob and Glen have lots of birds that come to their porch feeder.

Along our way, we met up with Rachael's parents, Donna and David, for a nice visit and lunch together.

Trees in bloom along our way south...

John's cousin, Roger, met us along the way to meet and visit...

Here we are visiting with our dear friends, Kathy and Dennis, who just recently moved to Bradenton, Florida.
We took in a Sox and Orioles preseason baseball game..
 Delicious meals at every turn...

Fancy food and drink pictures with Trudy in mind...  we did a lot of sampling and sharing...

I suppose it looks like we did a lot of eating, and I suppose we did... sure was a treat to eat outside!
The weather was perfect!

When we weren't eating, we were walking on the beach.
We worked every day to get in at least 10k 'steps'.

lots to see on the beach... birds and sculptures...

One evening we went to the beach to enjoy sunset..   here are our gracious hosts.

There was a wedding taking place down by the water...

People gather outside the beach side restaurant with drinks to watch the sunset and to wait for their table.

very beautiful!

One day we went to the Selby Botanical Gardens... lots of blooms!
This is an inside rain forest type environment.
Then we had lunch outside with the ducks, who visit all the tables.

This is a staghorn fern... growing in the tree!

I think this is looking back at Bradenton... or not... :

amazing!

Another day we went to Sanibel while Dennis went to work.  :-(
Here are a few pictures from the Bubble Room on Captiva.

Wednesday morning is 'bread' day... we were nearly first in line for this social event of the week!
What fun!  And GREAT deals!  :-)

And we got to see a pair of Roseate Spoonbills with a white great heron... right in their back yard!  I was not able to get a good picture, but there is the heron.  She spoonbills are going over the bank... just the tips of their heads are showing.

This is the view of their home from across the lake.

Another day we walked on the river walk in downtown Bradenton.   Naturally we found good places to eat.
John tried out the concrete chairs...

And we worked on puzzles.
... and shell collections...

Nothing says spring quite like tulips!

While we were on vacation, Maeve fell and broke her arm/elbow.  Here she is in my fleece, keeping warm.  We are having a 'date' night together.
Her cast on her left arm is just visible here as she vacuums.
Seems kind of rough to have to vacuum with a broken arm...
Laurie, her day care provider, did her hair today- beautiful braid.

Now Maeve is putting pennies in a jar with Gramp.  My grandmother had one of these 'Lincoln' jar banks on her window sill, and we grand kids were allowed to take turns having the contents when she had it filled.
Maeve is learning to sort out the pennies from the rest of the change.

 seeing how full it is...

Maeve and Martin got into Grammy's makeup together... Gramp found them hiding in his closet with perfume and brushes in hand...
